Managing SAP ERP system data archiving

SAP ERP systems rely upon database systems such as Oracle, SQL Server and DB2, for their operation. Hence the longer these systems are in place within organisations, the larger the databases become and as these databases grow, performance, in terms of the time that it takes to complete a transaction, is adversely affected.

Organisations with SAP ERP solutions that have been in production for several years are facing the challenges of high operational costs, low performance and possible risk of non-compliance. Some sources estimate that corporate databases double or triple in size every year. Limiting the amount of data stored on an ERP system is an essential element of a proper corporate storage and data management strategy. However, removing data from an ERP system can be a complex and risky task. A data archiving strategy is required that maximises storage and networking resources, whilst ensuring continuity of business information access. SAP Data Archiving is the only method supported by SAP to remove application data from the database in a consistent, secure and comprehensive manner.

Data Archiving is often overlooked during implementations, with our holistic in depth operational experience of SAP environments, we recognise that it is a very important aspect of maintaining a healthy SAP system. This is particularly true for systems that are growing rapidly. Equally, if planning or considering an SAP upgrade, an effective data archiving strategy will help ensure that application performance of your new release is not compromised by the overhead of maintaining historical data from closed and redundant business processes.

In addition to the whole SAP landscape, the requirement for data archiving is also appropriate for specific aspects of an SAP system; for example, an IDoc interface with high data volumes is easily capable of adversely affecting system performance if not archived correctly.

SAP Data Archiving relocates data belonging to closed business processes from the SAP database to externally stored and compressed archive files. This data is stored safely and remains readily accessible for your business users and boosts application performance.
Our fully managed SAP Data Archiving service, based on our Cloud platform, Attenda RTI, is delivered in conjunction with SAP UK Packaged Services. Our Service can help your clients to simply and effectively automate this routine business process, improving the performance of their live SAP environment and ensuring that the archived data remains a true business asset.

Rising to PCI Challenges and Opportunities

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) requires merchants and service providers that store, process or transmit customer payment card data to adhere to information security controls and processes that ensure data integrity. PCI regulates point of sale, telephone, online and all other types of transactions. In this feature we highlight some of the challenges and opportunities of PCI.
